No one would have guessed that the movie Casablanca would have been a success. Like many movies of the 1940's, Casablanca was simply another picture, a deadline. It was not considered an epic work, nor was it shot in brilliant technicolor. Yet, Casablanca is considered the number two movie of all time by the American Film Institute, and ranked by many amongst films such as Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, and the Wizard of Oz.

Casablanca's success might be considered lucky, or the perfect combination of a good book, cast, and director, but whatever the formula, it has withstood the test of time. What makes Casablanca unique is that while the plot is set in WWII Morocco, the story could be set almost anywhere people are being oppressed by a government.
